Lejla pride
Best position yet!
Treće
mjesto - najbolji dosad plasman BiH! Hari i ekipa
su imali odličan nastup koji se može svrstati
među najefektivnijim nastupima svih izdanja
Eurovizije. Zahvaljujući plasmanu, Bosna i
Hercegovina sljedeće godine neće morati proći
kroz kvalifikacijsku rundu već će se direktno
naći u finalu Eurovizije 2007 u Finskoj.
U finalu 2006, "Lejla" je osvojila 229
poena zahvaljujući glasovima 32 zemlje. Nula
poena BiH je dobila od Andore, Estonije,
Letonije, Malte i Ujedinjenog Kraljevstva. U
polufinalu Hariju je pripalo 267 poena, od svih
zemalja učesnica. Finska je
zasluženo pobjedila mada smo se svi nadali da
ćemo imati priliku organizirati Euroviziju 2007
u Bosni i Hercegovini.
Sljedeće godine će biti veoma teško ponoviti
uspjeh "Lejla" pa će tim PBS-a imati
vrlo težak zadatak. Nadamo se da će konačno
neki od bh kompozitora doći do izražaja i
pokazati da su još uvijek zainteresirani. In any
case, see you next year in Finland!

Lejla on stage as a Greek tragedy
In an
interview with Greek broadcaster ERT's official
Eurovision 2006 website, Hari was able to uncover
some details regarding his performance on ESC
stage in Athens.
Hari informed the interviewer that the
performance would be theatrical and would be
reminiscent of a Greek tragedy, showcasing the
grand sorrow of a forbidden love. The song has
been described as a Bosnian version of Romeo and
Juliet so a tragic and theatrical performance of
the song would add to the overall feeling.
In the rest of the interview, Hari qualified his
participation at Eurovision 2006 as the pinnacle
of his long-lasting career. He is currently
working hard on promoting his song in Turkey,
Macedonia, Slovenia and Greece, already having
made appearances at Evropesma in Belgrade and the
popular Croatian TV show "Studio 10."
Hari will also play host to the Greek entrant
Anna Vissi, who is set to visit Bosnia and
Herzegovina on May 1, performing in the
"Feminnem Show" on BHT1 television
channel.

Lejla video finished
Director Pjer Žalica has
filmed the last take of the official video clip
for the song "Lejla," sung by Hari Mata
Hari. The song was shot on several locations in
Herzegovina: the old town of Mostar, the Old
Bridge, lake Hutovo blato, Blidinje and Ruiste
mountains.
The Old Bridge and the old town of Mostar are the
only locations in Bosnia and Herzegovina to
feature on UNESCO's World Heritage list. The
bridge and its surroundings, were built by Mimar
Hayruddin, a student of Sinan the Ottoman
architect and are considered to be one of the
great structures of the 16th century.
The theme
of the clip has been reported to be a fatal Romeo
and Juliet love with Bosnian ethno-cultural and
nature motifs. The shooting was hampered by
persistent bad weather and low temperature, but
that only added to the dramatic tone of the song
and the story behind it.
The video is to premiere on BHT1 on tomorrow,
March 17 during the central news at 19:00 Central
European Time (CET) and also in the
"Feminnem show" at 21:00 CET. You can
download the video at the link above.

Lejla on the Old Bridge
The first
take for the video clip for "Lejla" was
filmed yesterday, Monday, March 13th in the
afternoon in the Mostar neighborhood Ruište.
Sabina Bačvić-Zečević, spokeswoman for PBS
BiH, said that the filing has started and will
last for two days, followed by post-production.
"The first take was supposed to have been
filmed atop of Mostar's Old Bridge. However, due
to bad weather conditions and high winds, the
first take was filmed in Ruište. The clip will
be filmed at locations in Hutovo blato, Lake
Blidinje, Old Bridge and old town core of
Mostar," explained Bačvić-Zečević,
reminding that the director is Pjer Žalica.
"Given the fact that
the song Lejla is the Bosnian-Herzegovinian
version of Romeo and Juliet, the video clip will
carry strong BiH symbolism and it entirely
follows this year's slogan 'It's time for Bosnia
and Herzegovina.' As promised by director Pjer
Žalica's synopsis, the video material will be
centered around the environment. Highest
importance is given to the natural and cultural
diversity of BiH and of course, the wonderful
interpretation of Hari Varešanovic", says
Bačvić-Zečević.
She adds that the clip will be finalized by May
16.
"The video will be part of our promotional
material, which will be presented at the Heads of
Delegation meeting, by the BH Eurosong 2006 head
of delegation Lejla Babovic. The team consisting
of Hari Varešanović, Željko Joksimović,
Fahrudin Pecikoza & Pjer Žalica is the
winning combination and May 18 in Athens will
trully be the time for Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The video will have its premiere on BHT1,"
contends Bačvić-Zečević.

Lejla to be filmed in
Herzegovina
March 10
was the deadline to vote in PBSBiH's web poll to
decide the title of the BiH song at Eurovision
2006. After over 13,000 song downloads and a
total of 4173 votes received, "Lejla"
has been chosen as the official title. 3051
people voted for "Lejla," 660 for
"Zar bi mogla ti drugog voljeti" and
462 for "Sakrivena." This will be the
second time a Bosnian has sung a song called
Lejla, first time being Seid Memić Vajta singing
for Yugoslavia back 1981.
The meaning
of Lejla is "a dark and mystic night, when
fate is decided, a night of a thousand dreams and
desires." It is a name that is very common
BiH, introduced by Arabic poems and novels. It
was first romanticized in the legend of Mejnun
(Kais) and Leyli, a story of a young man
tragically in love with the neighboring tribal
chief's daughte. It is a story told over and
over, from Arabia to Central Asia, North Africa
and Southeastern Europe and even inspired artists
such as Eric Clapton with "Leyla" and
ZZ Top with "Leila."
Tomorrow,
Hari Mata Hari is to guest perform at Evropesma
2006 in Belgrade. This will be HMH's first time
to promote the song outside of Bosnia and
Herzegovina. But work will not stop there.
Starting Monday, March 13, the filming of the
official video clip will take place. On board as
director is Pjer Žalica, himself a member of
Hari Mata Hari in its starting years back in the
early 80s. Žalica is a world renowned director,
known for the recent movies and Gori vatra and Kod
amidze Idriza.
The video clip will be filmed in the old town
core of Mostar. The first take will occure on the
Old Bridge itself. The bridge was reconstructed
in 2004. Following Mostar, the filming will move
to areas around Lake Blidinje and the Hutovo blato National Park.

It *IS*
time for BiH! Let's go!
Sunday,
March 5 came and went. Skiing was the game in New
York, but Bosnia and Herzegovina was alit with
the splendor of the BH Eurosong 2006 spectacle ,
staged in the grand old National Theatre in
Sarajevo.
Actor Mario Drmać and Dejan Kukrić of PBSBiH
hosted the show which saw several previous
Bosnian songs performed - Sabahudin Kurt was back
with "Život je sklopio krug,"
Ambasadori with "Ne mogu skriti svoju
bol," Mija Martina with her entry from Riga
2003 and Deen with "In The Disco" from
Istanbul 2004.
Bebi Dol
and Sanja Doležal were on hand for interviews,
while Željko Joksimović was also present on
stage, giving a performance of "Lane
moje" greeted with a loud applause from the
audience.
Hari sang some of the band's greatest and most
famous songs, after which he sang the Bosnian
song for Athens 2006. The song was well accepted
and liked by the audience. Now, it is up to the
public to give their reactions.
The song as
of now is named Lejla. On its website, PBS is
having a poll to (help?) decide the actual name
of the song. The sites around the Internet all
are going for Lejla already. If you'd like to
still help in deciding the official name of the
song, go to pbsbih.ba/bheurosong06 and click
on "Glasajte" on the bottom of the
screen. A small pop-up window will open where
you'll cast your vote. March 10 is the deadline
to submit votes.
Hari will
go to Athens as Hari Mata Hari, but it is unknown
whether there will be any of the band members on
stage. Currently, the band is made up of four
other male artists, who all play different
instruments and some of which write the band's
songs. In BH Eurosong, Hari was accompanied on
stage by balet dancers.
A small editorial follows. For me, this song is
fantastic. It's Bosnian, it's got soul and a
beautiful story behind it. It's a pop rendition
of traditional sevdah songs, which usually
revolve around simple stories passed on from the
past. They're about lovers, about people, about
life, about nature and sometimes about God.
Lejla is a story of two lovers, sung by a man
overcome with sorrow for his maiden. The Bosnian
Romeo and Juliet is how it has been dubbed by
PBSBiH. A simple tragic love story, beautiful
melodies and a big climax. I think it just might
be the time for BiH!

"I expect victory at Eurovision"
This year's representative
of BiH at Eurovision, Hajrudin - Hari
Varešanović is currently the busiest musician
and singer of the post-war music scene. In
addition to leading his big life project, band
"Hari Mata Hari," Varešanović
composes songs and writes lyrics for other
singers from our and Croatian and Serbian music
scene. Curently, he is finishing up the music for
the film "Duhovi Sarajeva" (Ghosts of
Sarajevo) and is preparing a new album.
He admits that he's expecting a high position in
the semifinal and the final of Eurovision 2006.
"I expect victory at Eurovision 2006. I want
to win and that's my goal. I was not hurt by the
disqualification in 1999. I was sad because I had
a good song. Eurovision has earned its rating
back that it lost in the nineties. Starting with
Istanbul, it has come back to being a special
media event. PBSBiH has given me untied control
this year, to bring the competition to a certain
degree of professionalism and quality. That's why
I said yes. Zdravko Čolić recently said that he
admires me for accepting to take part in
Eurovision, having in mind my rich career. I have
the need now to make it so. If I won't, who will?
I'll make an effort for the Eurosong project so
that all layers of societies get into it. It is a
community thing," asserts Varešanović.

Bosnian song premiere on March 5
Hari
Varešanović will debut his Eurovision song in a
television show to take place in the National
Theatre Sarajevo, said Ines Mrenica, PR manager
for BH Eurosong 2006.
The 70-minute live show will see Hari sing
several different versions of the song that is as
yet nameless. The show will play host to many
performers and authors from previous Eurovision
Song Contests.
"The
TV show will be broadcast live on March 5 at
20:00 CET on BHT1. The design trio Kao Pao Shu
are in charge of the look of the performance of
Hari Varešanović," explained Mrenica.
She said that currently in the works are
preparations for the productions of the video
clip for the Bosnian Eurovision song.
"Pjer Žalica is interested in directing the
video. Negotiations are pending, as Žalica is in
the hospital after a hip operation. The clip will
be filmed at several locations in Mostar,"
said Mrenica.
She added that the song is in the final phases of
production, and that the back vocal and
instrumental parts have been recorded.
"Hari Varešanović and Željko Joksimović
are satisfied with the completed work and say
that the song has improved from the original demo
to the point of a completely different
arrangement. The first stop in the promotional
campaign after BH Eurosong will be Belgrade,
where Hari will perform at the interval act of
Evropesma 2006," said Mrenica.

Vrijeme je za BiH!
The BH Eurosong 2006 team is happy to say that
the reactions to the selection of this year's
singer and songwriters are very positive and that
the direct internal selection this year is a
winning combination for the competition in
Greece.
Željko
Joksimović's song is currently in the production
phase, and the author is especially attached to
the song because it was made in "a short
inspirational moment and it simply came out of
[him]." The BHT1 team is now in Belgrade and
is observing the recording of the song in
Željko's studio, while a portion of the
production will be done in the studios of
"Music Production of PBSBiH."
The lyrics, written by Fahrudin Pecikoza and
Dejan Ivanović are "fragrant" of
Bosnia and Herzegovina and have a love theme. The
song speaks of an unfortunate love in a way that
can only be loved and sung in Bosnia and
Herzegovina. The song still does not have a
title, and the reason for that is that for the
first time this year the fans of BiH and the
diaspora will be able to choose it from one of
the suggested titles put forth by Hari and the
authors.
Currently
in the works is the visual identity that will be
the official signature of the complete BH
Eurosong 2006, and the inspiration for this very
important segment will be drawn from motifs of
great love, sadness and Bosnian front yards. The
song that will represent BiH at Eurovision 2006
in Athens will be our version of Romeo and
Juliet. The visual identity will contain elements
of traditional Bosnian jewelry and the rich ethno
tradition of Bosnian peoples in a stylized modern
form.
The performer Hari Varešanović, on the first
listening of the demo version, emotionally
identified with the complete aura of the song.
His twenty-year experience on the music scene and
the star status that has not let up, are an
adequate background to exposing the ethno musical
signature of Željko Joksimović. Duo Joksimović
and Varešanović is functioning creatively with
the goal to bring this song to the final form so
that they could represent Bosnia and Herzegovina
in an authentic way.
The slogan of this year's BH Eurosong is
"It's time for Bosnia and Herzegovina!"
which means that all the audiovisual elements
will be cemented in that stronghold and that the
project is completely open and invites everybody
to contribute to the success and the promotion of
Bosnia and Herzegovina towards the
millions-strong audience and the fulfillment of
the slogan.
In the live television show program "BH
Eurosong Show 06," which will take place in
the National Theatre in Sarajevo on March 5,
2006, the representing song will be officially
presented. The big television spectacle will host
many known music names from BiH, the region and
Europe. BHT1 team is working fast on the
preparations for a successful presentation and
realization of the TV show. The show will be
available through the terrestrial channels, the
satellite channel and the Internet.

Željko about his BH Eurosong
engagement (Nezavisne, February 10, 2006)
Positive reactions from
Belgrade
Željko Joksimović, a popular singer from Serbia
and Montenegro and the composer of the song with
which Hari Varešanović will represent Bosnia
and Herzegovina at Eurovision in Athens, says
that he will soon hold a concert in Sarajevo.
He admits he's looking forward to it, because he
believes that the public here deserves the
promotion of his new album.
"I am very satisfied with the reactions,
considering that I was not a part of a huge media
campaign. Simply, the music was placed in the
front, for people to understand it and listen to
in peace. The printing of 300,000 copies, which
went on sale in one day throughout former
Yugoslavia, says enough about the size of the
success of my album. I am glad I managed
something like that. So, I've decided to organize
a concert in Sarajevo. It will happen soon, and
at the same time, it will be a promotion of the
new material," says Joksimovic, adding that
his last album is sedate.
"And I'm a bit older, two, three
years," jokingly adds Joksimović.
As for the Bosnian Eurovision song, he says it is
honest.
"The song without a name yet breathes of
this area and what's most important it is very
honest and hearthfelt. It carries a good lyric
within it. There is an instrumental theme that's
excellent. It's a little stupid to be talking
about it, but the song is really honest. I hope
that the public from around here will accept it
as their own. We are on out way to make a huge
success. We're going to Athens to win," says
Joksimović.
He admits that because of his engagement in
creating the song for Hari Varesanovic to sing in
Athens, he turned town other calls for
cooperation with other countries, also
participants of this year's Eurovision.
"I declined offers from Belgium, Netherlands
and some other countries. It would be different
if I worked for Belgium or Netherlands. This is
my area. I feel it as mine and it is not foreign.
And that's why I made a good song," insists
Joksimović, adding that the reactions from
Belgrade about this engagement with the BH
Eurosong project have been positive.
"In one Belgrade newspaper, I read a poll
about my involvement with BiH and it was
positive. May it remain so till the end. I am
sure we have the right stuff. I think that
Belgrade is honored that I can entrust my
artistic work to Bosnia and Herzegovina,"
says Joksimović, who won the second place at
Eurovision 2004 in Turkey.

Hari will represent BiH at
Eurovision 2006 (Nezavisne, February 9, 2006)
We have made the best song
Hajrudin - Hari Varešanović will represent
Bosnia and Herzegovina at the Eurovision Song
Contest 2006 to be held in the Greek capital of
Athens, it was reported by the BH Eurosong team
today.
The composer of the song is Željko Joksimović
and the lyricists Fahrudin Pecikoza and Dejan
Ivanović. The song does not yet have a title and
will be performed on BHT1 on March 5.
Dejan Kukrić, director of the BH Eurosong
project and the official commentator for PBSBiH,
reminded us that this will be Bosnia's 11th time
at Eurovision.
"We are proud that this year in our team we
have stars of the local music scene. We hope to
be able to make it to the finale of the 51st
Eurovision Song Contest. The official slogal of
this year's BH Eurosong is 'It's time for Bosnia
and Herzegovina' ('Vrijeme je za Bosnu i
Hercegovinu'). After the first performance of the
song in the special 'Eurosong show,' intensive
preparations and video clip recording will
ensue," said Kukrić.
Hari says that he is very proud to be this year's
Bosnian representative at Eurovision.
"The song is the best in the world. I have
to admit that I have not heard a better one. I am
impressed with it and Pecikoza's lyrics. We have
made a song that comes out the spirit of our
people and I am glad to be singing it," said
Varešanović.
Željko Joksimović says that it is a great honor
for him to make a song that will be sung by Hari
Varešanović.
"The song is wonderful and the lyrics were
inspired by this region. And I hope that in the
end, we will win," said Joksimović.

Fresh news + rumors
PBSBiH will announce BH
singer on February 9
Today, February 6, PBSBiH has published an
invitation to the media to be present at the
official ceremony to present the Bosnian singer
for Athens.
The event will take place on February 9th at
14:00 in the University of Sarajevo's UNITIC
center. There will be a press conference in the
amphitheatre of the center and a cocktail party
immediately following the conference.
Rumors around Bosnian Internet sites suggest that
Hari Varešanović has indeed been picked to
represent Bosnia and Herzegovina in Greece.
What's new this time is that Aleksandra Radović,
a popular singer from Serbia is tipped to be part
of the team, either as the other half of a duet
or a backing singer to Hari. Also, rumors suggest
that Željko Joksimović has written the song,
which he says is better than "Lane
moje."
We shall know the truth on February 9th! Visit

PBSBiH publishes rules
Highlights from the official
rules
Today, January 27th, PBSBiH has
published the official rules of BH Eurosong 2006.
Overall, there aren't many changes, with one
notable exception being the way the competition
is organized and how the representing singer is
chosen.
The General Director of PBSBiH will name a team
of individuals who will be in charge of BH
Eurosong 2006. The rules state that the
broadcaster is searching for an established
songwriter, an established performer and an
established arranger. Interested individuals have
until January 23rd to submit their demos. You'll
notice that this date is in the past, meaning
that PBSBiH has already received what it is
looking for and it is safe to say that they
probably know who they will pick to go Athens.
The song chosen will be presented in a special TV
show on BHT1 on March 5th, both on the
terrestrial and satellite signals.
Songs in Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian (in the
ijekavian standard) are eligible to be entered.
PBSBiH reserves the right to translate the song
into English, French and any other language it
deems necessary. There is no restriction on the
nationality of the authors or performers.
There is no public televoting this year. The BH
Eurosong team, as named by the General Director,
will choose the singer and song to represent
Bosnia and Herzegovina in Greece.

Though it is still unofficial...
(tabloid Express, January
19, 2006)
Public personalities asked
about Hari
Even though we will officially find
out who will go to Athens for Eurovision at the
beginning of next month, it is inevitable that it
will be Hajrudin Hari Varešanović. Frontman of
"Hari Mata Hari," he's already got a
song ready to perform in May in the Greek
capital.
As possible authors, in addition to Hari, we've
heard names such as Dino Merlin and Željko
Joksimović, and the lyrics will be written by
Fahrudin Pecikoza.
The career of this Sarajevan has lasted more than
20 years. It began with Golubica,
"Ambasadori" and continued with
"Hari Mata Hari" and it's still going.
Hari has given 12 albums to audiences around
former Yugoslavia, not counting many compilations
and concert recordings. He ahs sold more than
five million albums. Throughout the world, his
performances have been seen by millions of
people. Those who can say the same are rare.
And despite all his victories and successes, Hari
still is not losing his motive. Quite the
opposite--when he was presented with the idea of
representing Bosnia and Herzegovia at Eurovision,
he took this job very seriously.
Day and night he has been working on the music
and the words of the song, and is getting in
touch with the most relevant authors in the
region, so ensure that his performance in Athens
is on the highest level.
To represent out country is more than just
another in a long line of festivals. Hari's
singing abilities are known to everybody, but we
wanted to know what certain public personalities
from different segments of public life thinks
about his participation at Eurovision. The
opinions are more or less - the same.
Ivica Šarić, Minister for Culture
and Sport, Sarajevo Canton:
Keeping in mind that Hari first has to sing in
the semifinal, I think that it would not be good
at all if he did not qualify for the final.
Before all, Hari is a singer with excellent vocal
abilities. It is too bad that he never went into
opera, because he is a great tenor, and those are
very rare in Bosnia and in former Yugoslavia as a
whole. If he were to go to Eurovision, I think he
will be in a very undesirous position, because we
know how it goes. Voting often has a political
character, so the voice and song quality are not
the only ones being judged. But, if you ask me if
he is the one who should represent Bosnia, then
my answer is definitely affirmative!
Gradimir Gojer, playwright and
director:
Varešanović is musically superior, without any
doubt! Also, concerning his style, I think that
Hari is definitely the only man on our music
scene who knows how to wear a suit. I don't
foresee a bad result for him, even though he has
to prove himself in the semifinal night. How high
he will go, all depends on him, I can't forebode
that for him. In any case, I believe in him.
Dino Konaković, former basketball
player, manager of team "Bosna":
I have a very high opinion of Hari Varešanović.
He is one of only a few musicians who has had a
proven value for decades. His vocal abilities
don't need comments, surely he is one of the
leaders in this area. Hari has it all - voice and
charisma, and he looks great. In my opinion, Hari
as our represetnative is an ideal solution. Of
course, the song is also important, even though I
don't doubt at all that Hari will pick the best
of the best. He has great support, both in
marketing and in media, and he is also strong
enough as a personality. We're not talking about
an up-and-coming, young s inger who needs an
event like this to become popular. All in all,
this is a great solution.
Halid Bešlić, singer:
Hari is a proven singer. And if he has a good
song, then we'll hit the bull's eye. What Hari
cannot allow himself is a bad song, but that
cannot happen to a s inger of his caliber. His
vocals are European, meaning in the same group as
world-renowned artists. In any case, I am a great
optimist when it comes to Hari representing us in
Athens.
Dino Merlin, singer and songwriter:
What is in the interest of all of us is for our
representative to place well in Athens. Of course
I wish him to win the best possible position. The
end result will show everything, so I can't
really say anything concrete about it. In any
case, I wish him best of luck in Athens.
Pjer Žalica, film director:
Besides the fact that Hari was my boss when I was
younger, my opinion about him is that he is one
of the best singers we've ever had. I think that
it is completely normal that we're represented by
one such singer. I am very happy about it. I am
sure that Hari will, with serious logistics and
with logic, face the project, because that's the
only way to become successful at such an
international event. Alas, my opinion is that the
singer is the one that profits the most from
projects like this one. But, on the other hand,
it could be a very commcercial project even for
the singer. I don't see a big problem in that
fact that Hari has ti compete in the qualifying
round, because in that case, the audience will
get the chance to hear and see him twice. So, if
the song is good, then it isn't very important.
If the song is not bad, then best is not to even
qualify for the final, but to finish last. I
believe that we have all the conditions for a
good placing. I know that Hari is very open to
cooperation and that he will include many
experienced and up-and-coming talents. I am glad
that Hari accepted to represent us, because I
wouldn't have been surprised if he had declined
the offer. In any case, I am an optimist and
support him fully.
Haris Silajdžić, politician,
former Prime Minister:
I think it would be great! Hari as our
representative in Greece would be a jackpot. What
is sure and unquestionable is that Hari has
qualities, but whether that will be decisive in
Athens, we shall see.
Zdravko Čolić, singer:
I don't know the situation on the Bosnian scene
perfectly. Hari is an excellent singer and he's
proven it many times over the years. I am certain
that Hari is the right choice.

She notes that the rules are in the final stages.
"The rules are going through a legal

contradictions. The said rules will be publicized
January 27th. The rules will include the manner
of local selection and other details regarding

EBU."
She said that currently in the works are talks

Varešanović, as a popular music star, has
expressed a wish to represent Bosnia at
Eurovision. However, we have not yet chosen our
singer."

Early start this year
Bosnians are
indeed everywhere!
As
many of us know by now, there will be (at least)
two Bosnians competing in Athens in 2006. In
addition to whoever PBSBiH (and possibly, the
