1990.written.by.vanja

The following are Vanja's comments. Hope you enjoy the mas much as I did.

ESC 1990 has a special meaning for me, because it was the first ESC that I watched from its beginning to the end. It was also held in my home-country (what it used to be), and I watched it in a peaceful and nice family atmosphere, so both ESC 1990 & ESC 1991 are very dear to me. Anyway, since I am here to do a review, let's start:

1. Spain: Even though there were certain complications with performing this song, it all ended very well. I cannot say that actual performance of scary looking Spanish women (ed. aren't we a little harsh, Vanja?) was very good, but still, it is their style. The song is all in all very good, and even today I often catch myself listening to this one. It is simply wonderful for parties, etc.

2. Greece: This song is boring. It is nothing new, and a big disappointment from Greece. Performance couldn't be worse or better with this type of song, and it all resulted with a very low placing for Greece, and ONLY 6 points from the Cypriot jury.

3. Belgium: Certainly one of the best Belgian entries in ESC. A sad melody, not a very clear title, but still a nice song. It was a bit underrated, but for me, it is not an easy forgettable song.

4. Turkey: Not so bad. The old man was looking a bit drunk, but maybe it's his image. Kissing the guitar after performance was also not exclusive, but still, the song itself had a nice melody, and I haven't used FF button for this one yet.

5. The Netherlands: I liked this song when I heard it for the first time, and even after watching it this last summer after 9 years again, I have to say that I remembered some of it. However, comparing it to the present-day standards, it is nothing special. I like the chorus mostly.

6. Luxembourg: I always hear positive comments on this song, but I am not satisfied with the performance, but yet, there is something delicious in this song.

7. United Kingdom: How could they possibly have sent this to ESC? Terrible. What's ironic is that war in ex-YU was close, and some say Brits knew it (apart from the Contest). Anyway, somewhat unproper song, especially from a country such as UK, and all in all, highly overrated, with a bad performance from Emma. Null from me.

8. Iceland: I like this one. It was a nice refreshment after UK, and it brought the recognizable ESC sound. I really liked the melody, and I am glad it did well.

9. Norway: This song is simply stupid. First of all, it is very hard to understand Norwegian, and plus I think they said "Branderburger Tor" a million times. I really do not like this song.

10. Israel: I hated this song, I always used FF button, until one day, I decided to listen to it from the very beginning to the very end. After some time, I realized how this song is so mysterious and rich, and different, and I realized that I really like it. This should be a tip for the others, too, because it seems to me that people either completely like or completely this dislike Shara barechovot (ed. You're damn right! This song sucks!).

11. Denmark: Noah's mom had it right (ed. No, don't blow her up now!. She's bad enough!). Lonnie was looking terrible in that dress, and the song is catchy, but I noticed that after few listenings, it started getting on my nerves. I showed it to some of my American friends, and they were laughing 3 days and 3 nights (ed. Don't you know that Americans do not appreciate these kind songs? Never show an ESC song to an American! I have learned my lesson).

12. Switzerland: Not so good, but not bad. I just cannot comment this song (ed. Damn, I was hoping you'd love this! I am still the only fan of this song).

13. Germany: This is a nice song, especially the chorus. It was Ralph Siegel's idea to send a Slovene guy to represent Germany, so it could gain more points from ex-YU jury, and it worked. Anyway, the song is ok.

14. France: I always liked this song, and it is still in my all time top 10 for ESC. The performance was really good, and I wanted this song to win, instead of Toto Cotugno's Insieme 1992. However, it is well known that "colored" singers (ed. Woh, you'd better watch what you're saying! j/k) surprisingly do not get many sympathies from European juries. Anyway, the ex-YU jury gave 12 points to France in 1990, and I had a chance to hear this song many times on some radio stations around ex-YU. Yes, one of my favorites from 1990.

15. ex-Yugoslavia: If I start commenting on this wonderful song, I will never stop, so I'll try to make it as short as possible. Tajci was cute, sweet, happy, the song was popular, wonderful. the The performance was better than all expectations, and it was really unfair for it to end on seventh position (too low, obviously). However, song reached extremely high popularity around all ex-Yu states, and her album was sold in millions. Still one of my all time favourites.

16. Portugal: Hm… underrated. The Ssng was performed between two favourites, ex-YU and Ireland, so it was very affected. Anyway, I am not saying that it is something fantastic, but a pretty OK song with sympathetic chorus.

17. Ireland: OK, I know that this song does not have so much quality in itself, but still I really like this song, especially the chorus, and the bridges. I wish that some other cities except London, Paris, Amsterdam, Rome were included. But, what can I say, I like it and that is it!

18. Sweden: Not my type of song. Nice schlager, but simply not my style of music.

19. Italy: I still don't know why it has this title, and for years, I thought it was called Unite Europe!. Toto Cutugno looked angry during the voting, and Italian jury had a traditionally unfair voting, and Toto didn't look happy after winning. It is normal why people do not sympathize with his act, and the song was not all that good, but still it was one of better.

20. Austria: A nice, catchy song, and one of my favorites from 1990, as well as one of the best Austrian entries from 1990s. Simone didn't look as good as Tajci, but the song was ok.

21. Cyprus: A disappointment from Cyprus. The song is catchy, but still boring. The singer is probably gay. I mean, its not that it bothers me, it's just that it seems obvious. They were all dressed unattractive, and I don't really like this song.

22. Finland: An interesting song from Finland. I guess ESC juries do not sympathize with the Finnish artists, so they all end on low positions. This song was ok, though.

Yes, my review for 1990 is over. Comparing to Noah's, you probably noticed some differences, but also some commonalities. Is it because of similar tastes (hm…) or the same citizenship (makes sense)…we'll see.
